Essential Learning Responds to Northern Illinois University Tragedy Free Online Courses Offered

(SAN DIEGO- (February 21, 2008) Essential Learning, the largest provider of e- learning services in the behavioral health and human services industry, was shocked and sadden to hear of yet another college campus shooting at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, February 14. We express deep condolences to the family members, victims, students and faculty that have been affected by this event.

In support of providers, in Dekalb and across the country, we are offering continuing education courses on disaster mental health for professionals and post traumatic stress disorder at no charge through March 31, on our CEQuick website, http://www.cequick.com/myeln/individual/default.asp

“Providers are again faced with this moment of violence that highlights the challenge in helping those with mental health problems on our college campuses” said Lorraine Watson, Ph.D., Co-Founder and President of Essential Learning. Although offering free courses will not solve the bigger problems we face in addressing student’s mental health needs, we want to assist providers, if we can, with helping people work through the grief and anxiety they may be feeling in the aftermath of this event.”

The online courses available to all practitioners are Disaster Mental Health Intervention: Project Web-Flash (Practical Frontline Assistance and Support for Healing) by Dr. Carol North and Dr. Barry Hong from Washington University in St. Louis and Dr. Betty Pfefferbaum of the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by Dr. Daniel Singley and Dr. Lorraine Watson, both with experience working with students at University of California, San Diego.
